Everything You Need to Work Smarter
When hydraulic grade line calculations have to be done right, Stormwater Studio is your go-to model. It handles all flow regimes including partial depth (free surface), full, surcharged, supercritical flow with hydraulic jumps.
Junction loss and Inlet calculations follow the latest HEC-22, Third Edition procedures. Specify any starting tailwater elevation as well as existing invert elevations, pipe sizes or slopes. Even inlets! It also has many automated design options.
The graphic output is the best in the industry!
Fine-tune Your Designs in Real Time
“What-if I changed that 36-inch to a 30? How would that affect the HGL upstream?” Stormwater Studio answers questions like that and many other design “What-ifs”… in real time; during the calculations!
An intuitive, interactive tool-bar provides the means right on the profile drawing. Work with a single line or an entire branch. Get it done right the first time. A real breakthrough in value engineering your storm sewer designs.
Analyze Existing Systems
Use Stormwater Studio to model and critically analyze existing storm sewer systems. Import Pipe Networks from LandXML, layouts from DXF or simply draw the lines in yourself against a georeferenced background map or image. Up to 200 lines with multiple outfalls can be included.
There are a host of options when computing as well as notifications pointing you to any weak spots in the system. Make changes and recommendations for improvements.
Accelerate Your Modeling Processes with Automation
Plug in drainage areas, Rational method runoff coefficients and inlet times. Stormwater Studio does the rest. Tc and rainfall intensity are computed automatically. Additional known Qs can also be inserted or extracted anywhere in your system. Optionally compute inlet times by a built-in TR55 calculator as well as composite runoff coefficients.
Develops IDF Curves Anytime, Anywhere
Develops Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves with up to 8 return periods (1, 2, 3, 5, 10, (15, 20 or 25), 50 and (100, 200 or 500) – year events. Specify equation coefficients for both FHA or third-degree polynomial, enter existing intensities, or import data from Hydro-35 or NOAA Atlases.
Once and Done
What’s even better is that there’s no need to repeat. Set up your rainfall data once and forget about it. Stormwater Studio automatically reloads your IDf curves for each and every project, so you don’t have to.
Models a Variety of Inlet and Junction Types
These built-in inlets are customizable and ship with user-definable defaults for things like length, width, throat height, open area, cross-slopes, etc. Types include:
- Curb (horizontal or inclined throat)
- Combination Curb & Grate
- Drop grate
Inlets can be set in sag or on-grade locations with compound gutter cross-slopes and local depressions.
Draws Inlet Section and Plan Views
These graphically rich and detailed drawings take the mystery out of inlet modeling. Sections of both the Inlet and Gutter are accompanied by their Plan view providing a strong visual connection to the numerical output.
Stay Ahead of the Pack with the Latest Methodologies
With Stormwater Studio you’ll get the latest HEC-22, Third Edition technology for junction loss calculations. All inlet calculations comply with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Hydraulic Engineering Circular 22 (HEC-22, Third Edition) with bypass & carryover flows.
Bypass flows can be directed offsite or to any other inlet in the project including upstream inlets and other systems. Computes both inlet and roadway gutter flow depths and spread widths.
Any Line can be an Open Channel!
This latest feature will come in handy for those times when your system has pipes that outfall into open channels and then re-enter downstream. Stormwater Studio can model trapezoidal, rectangular and v-shaped channels. These open channels can be placed anywhere in your system.
You’ll Look Good with Superb Graphics
Just like other lines in your system, Stormwater Studio employs widely used energy-based calculation methods for open channel hydraulics. It can handle any flow regime including subcritical and supercritical flow with hydraulic jumps. Accurate profiles and surface drawings are automatically produced and included in your reports.
Add Utility Crossings to Your Model
This one, critical feature will pay for your new software… tenfold. It allows you to add utility crossings such as as water mains, gas lines, even other sewers to your model. The software is on constant alert for crossing intersections and potential conflicts with your storm sewer. Elevation conflicts are instantly highlighted on your plan.
Automatically Included in Profiles
Utility crossings are automatically included on your profile plots. It adds the computed vertical clearance, dimensions it, and notes it on the drawing legend. Use the Interactive Toolbar to raise and lower your storm sewer lines to get the clearances just right.
With this feature you’ll rest at night knowing your design work is first-rate and error-free.
Model Broken-back Culverts
The ability to include open channels and pipes without structures make Stormwater Studio very versatile. Easily model broken-back culverts with or without drop structures.
Watch how the water surface transitions from subcritical flow to critical flow, to supercritical and finally to an energy dissipating hydraulic jump where velocities are returned to normal.
Model Inverted Siphon Culverts
Have a utility crossing under your roadway? No problem! Stormwater Studio can also model Sag culverts, often called “inverted siphons”. A broken-back “Sag” culvert offers the advantage of providing adequate vertical clearance for the pipe under the roadway pavement and subgrade. This insures the hydraulic grade line stays out of harms way.
Model Flow Diversions
Add flow splits or diversions at any junction in your model. No complicated procedure to follow, just draw the upstream end of your diversion line to the proposed diversion junction and the software takes care of the rest. Use this feature to divert flows off-site; to another separate branch; or re-introduce back into the system downstream.
Automatically Matches HGLs
Stormwater Studio manages the flow diversion hydraulics automatically. There’s no need for you to guess at the split proportions or come up with some rating curve.
The software employs sophisticated calculation procedures that provide an exact balance between the diverted flows and the resulting hydraulic grade line. Rational method drainage areas and Cs (Sum CxA) entering the diversion are split in the same manner.
Cad Integration with LandXML & DXF Import & Export
Import Pipe Networks from LandXML or dxf-based pipe layouts. Add georeferenced background maps from LandXML, image or dxf files for easy plan layouts. Export your pipe systems back to LandXML. Save production-ready profiles to dxf with user-defined vertical and horizontal scales.

Import a Dynamic TIN Surface
Import a TIN Surface from your CAD software and Stormwater Studio will automatically set your storm sewer Surface/Rim Elevations to match the TIN Surface. If the location of your Lines change, so do the Rim Elevations.
When a Surface TIN is loaded you’ll never have to enter Rim Elevation for your storm sewer lines. In addition, the Surface TIN will automatically generate intermediate ground points between junctions for use in your Profiles.
“I feel very much at home in this software. You’ve done a great job. As a civil engineer with specific work in hydraulics and hydrology, I’ll be recommending your software to colleagues.”
Draw the System Right on Your Map
Take the guesswork out of plan layouts by importing background maps from a variety of sources. Once imported you can draw, or import, your storm sewer system over the top. Stormwater Studio supports Alignments, Parcels and Plan Features from LandXML, DXF, PNG, BMP and JPG file types.
Geo-reference Your Background Map
Geo-reference your imported image-based background maps by specifying X, Y extents for the lower and upper corners.
You Demand Authority and Attention
And you’ll get it every time with Stormwater Studio’s reports. These exceptional looking print-outs include graphs and production-ready profiles, each designed to be easily understood by you while influencing your reviewers and peers.
In addition to a variety of pre-formatted reports, we’ve reserved two Custom reports. You can choose from over 80 variables to place in the columns you choose.
